Excellent mechanical properties of the SMO-254 Round Bar D  led to longer tool life. The bar has properties like ultimate tensile strengths, toughness, ductility and impact strengths. The fatigue strength and compressive strength of the round bar is good. The wear resistance of the bar is sufficient for many tooling applications. The round bar has good heat treatment features. It has outstanding workability and high resistance to crack propagation; hence they are easily machined. The round bar has great repair weldability. They are free from carburization and decarburization. Corrosion and pitting resistance is superior to the round bar, and there is a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Military usage of the round bar is for weapons, ammunition equipment and lightweight, portable military bridges. The bar is also used for ordnance breech blocks.
